Dietmar Dreier and the environment

We’ve always sought out and found whatever opportunities to contribute to environmental protection we can. But about four years ago, took things to next level. That’s why we commissioned ORCA (https://www.orca-climate.org) in 2021 to analyze our carbon footprint according to the standards of the internationally recognized Greenhouse Gas Protocol. We're proud to say the first simple steps we took after the ORCA analysis reduced of our CO2 emissions by 47% (as of spring 2022).

At our regular dreierGRÜNT meetings, we continually rededicate ourselves to finding new areas of improvement and take steps, both small and large, toward becoming as environmentally friendly as we can possibly be. Steps we’ve taken:

Power 🔌

We purchase our electricity from Green Planet Energy.
We’re fully committed to the ongoing transition in Germany to a low carbon, environmentally sound, reliable, and affordable energy supply from purely renewable sources, without coal and nuclear.

Additional measures:
» We use energy-saving power strips with switches: for years we’ve equipped every workplace with these smart solutions that help us avoid consuming energy we don’t need for chargers, stand-by devices, etc.
» We use a central power cut-off
» We use LED light sources
» We would use solar power, however our headquarters is a protected historic monument, so this is prohibited by law

Heating 🥶

» We heat more efficiently and consume less energy by using digital radiator thermostats, window contact switches, wall thermostats and wall switches
» We’ve had isofloc thermal insulation added to the roof (blow-in insulation using renewable raw materials)
» We’ve replaced all our windows with new, energy efficient models
» We use the waste heat from our server room

Mobility 🚗

» We are switching to full e-mobility: All 5 company cars are fully electric
» We use an electric box truck to deliver products to our library customers within our region.
» Thirteen employees use a service e-bike for their commute to the office. Some of them are available for use by all employees during breaks.
» We provide a stipend for the use of public transport.

Consumables♻️

» Invoices: We use 100% recycled paper (Steinbeis Papier)
» Invoices: We intentionally avoid using colored ink
» Digitization of document transfers: this helps us avoid unnecessary printouts
» Shipping: In addition to primarily using used cardboard boxes, shipping bags and packing materials, we've switched to equivalent grass paper products for all of our other shipping materials
» Foiling: For the foiling of books we use sustainable organic film made from sugar (E-Lam)
» Office supplies: We use the most sustainable options available, such as recycled ballpoint pens, refillable Eddings, etc.
» Cleaning supplies: All the cleaning supplies we use at Dietmar Dreier have been produced sustainably, are formulated with plant-based active ingredients, and are free of microplastics and vegan.
» Toilet paper: We only use toilet paper that bears the Blue Angel eco-label
» We only use refillable soap dispensers in all washrooms

Other measures 🌳

» We stay paperless whenever possible
» We use a freshwater dispenser with a filtration system for all our employees, which helps reduce our CO2 footprint compared to bottled water
» Species protection and greening --> Creation of a wildflower meadow and habitat island for insects
» We raise awareness and educate our employees with information boards in our kitchens and hallways:
   • Proper ventilation
   • We use regionally-sourced, seasonal fruits and vegetables
